What Is a Marketing Consultant?

Marketing consulting (and consulting in general) offers services that clients can't deliver themselves. This means that a marketing consulting firm will offer advice and information to companies of all types to meet their needs or to solve a problem. In the specific field of marketing consulting, firms will offer new ways to market a product to maximize its potential for the consumer. Some companies may have a good product but are unaware of how to effectively market this product, and this is where the marketing consultant comes in. If the proper marketing doesn't occur, the product, which may be extremely valuable to the consumer, won't reach its full potential for sales and profitability.

Large firms typically have different management consulting services, while smaller firms offer one specific type of consulting service. There are many types of consulting services, such as marketing consulting, scientific consulting, physical distribution and logistics consulting, occupational safety consulting, environmental consulting, security consulting, administration management consulting, and human resources consulting. Large firms have the advantage in gaining business over the smaller firms.

The required education and training can vary depending on which type of marketing one chooses to specialize in. In general, those who wish to become a marketing consultant earn a bachelor's or master's degree in business and management and may be hired into an entry-level position upon graduating. Also, those who are currently enrolled in a university may seek an internship to get ahead and gain valuable experience when they graduate. Consulting firms usually handle one specific type of marketing, so the training and education will vary. Communication, verbal and written, and analytical skills are vital parts of the marketing consulting field. To have a successful marketing consultant career you must possess all of these qualities plus show enthusiasm, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and the commitment to help the client in any way, shape, or form you can.

Another option for education is the Institute of Management Consultants, which offers a variety of tools and resources to aid marketing consultants. Those who pass an interview and a written and oral exam and who meet all the necessary requirements laid out by the IMC will become certified management consultants. This could be highly valuable to the advancement of a marketing consultant career because it displays dedication, outstanding ethics, and principles. The IMC offers seminars and workshops, so marketing consultants can constantly refine their skills. There are currently 26 chapters of the IMC located all across the United States with international locations as well. Those who do join the IMC can advance quickly in their marketing consultant careers. Certification is not mandatory but will be beneficial in your career.

After gaining experience with large marketing firms, many consultants start their own marketing consulting businesses for themselves. Start-up costs are relatively low and this path offers the benefit of being one's own boss. Competition is very high in the marketing industry, so the best way to approach it is to become certified and gain as much knowledge as possible to compete. Marketing firms also have marketing managers who seek out potential clients and manage sales departments.

The marketplace for marketing consultant positions will increase over the next decade due to the complexity of business practices. Certain consulting services will increase depending on the nature of their work. As the world continues to grow larger it also becomes smaller at the same time. Companies will look to reach foreign marketplaces to sell and promote their products. Marketing consulting firms offer more than just how to sell a shirt properly. They also help companies adapt to new software technologies which adhere to local and international guidelines to improve their accounting and money management.

The struggling economic situation always plays a part in the hiring of marketing consultants. Some companies can't afford to outsource their marketing consulting when they are looking for ways to cut costs and save money. Even so, with bleak economic times companies may need to invest in marketing consultant professionals to manage budgets regarding employee salaries and to determine untapped markets in which to sell their products.

Those who do become marketing consultants make a good living for themselves. The average starting salary for entry-level marketing consultants is $38,000, with many opportunities for advancement. Marketing consultants who have some years of experience but are not yet senior or executive-level consultants can still make up to nearly $60,000 per year with bonuses and stock options. Senior consultants and vice presidents can make significantly more, between $140,000 and $160,000 per year. Consultants make a high living wage, and this will only increase the competition for positions.

Many marketing consultants work 35-40 hours per week under strict deadlines which cause stress. Working nights and weekends is common to meet necessary deadlines. Some consultants may travel to meet with other consultants in related fields to discuss business plans and solutions to problems.

Marketing is a huge part of the society we live in and there will always be a need for it, regardless of the economic state we live in. Consumers need to know about the latest products and services companies can offer to improve the overall quality of life in the modern age. Companies need consumers to purchase products to keep the business cycle continuing and to create progress. Marketing consultant professionals create, find, and determine the best solutions to achieve this.

You Must Have the Home Team Advantage
One of the most interesting things to me is witnessing people when they make a complete reversal in their lives and overnight become incredibly successful, happy, and fulfilled people. Perhaps the reason this is so fascinating is that it happens so rarely. When this does happen, more often than not, the major life change is related to a career, location, mate, or some other important aspect of the...
