If you are in pursuit of a marketing career then you should definitely take time to consider all of the traits that are necessary to landing a marketing job. You must have a diverse range of skills so that you can take advantage of all of the possibilities and find exactly the right position.
You must also have the mental ability to analyze data and be creative enough to present information that speaks to the needs and wants of the public. You will have to spend some time analyzing the market and locating exciting new avenues for the company that you work for to travel down to increase their profits.
As you complete your upper level education, be sure to include some classes in mathematics and statistics. Taking classes in liberal arts and business is also a great idea. You want your base of knowledge to be very broad so you can be more appealing to potential employers. The competition for a marketing career may be very intense so you need to be prepared.
You should also consider doing an internship while you are in school or just after graduation. The internship should provide you with experience in the areas of analyzing and gathering data as well as writing detailed papers. It should also give you an opportunity to conduct interviews. All of these areas of knowledge and experience will be helpful as you apply for your dream marketing job.
In order to take yourself to the front of the application pool, you may wish to continue your education and pursue a master's degree in an area such as marketing, psychology, or statistics. Many employers are looking for the applicants with higher education levels to fill the positions. Because there are so many applicants they can afford to be choosier and those with a higher education level tend to be looked upon more favorably.
It is important that you enter the search for a marketing job with the idea that you will need to start at the bottom and work your way up. Typically, anyone that is looking for a marketing research position will have to do the menial jobs in the beginning as they learn from those that have been in the industry for a longer amount of time. Look at it as an opportunity to fine tune your skills and to learn new techniques from people that have had the experience to gain the knowledge.
When sending out your resume, be sure to cover a broad range of employment opportunities. You can use your skills in other forms of advertising such as working for a charity organization or for a consulting firm. You can also look to the software companies for a marketing job. By applying for a marketing career in more than one area of the industry you will have a much better chance at finding the marketing job that you are so interested in achieving.
Keep in mind that some of the smaller companies may subcontract their marketing work out. You may want to consider offering your services as a contractor in these cases. It saves the company money as they do not have to create a position or add another full time employee to their payroll.
