Psystar, a Miami-based Mac vendor, has installed Apple’s Leopard operating system on its PC hardware to offer a Mac clone for only $399. The system, which Psystar calls OpenMac, has incurred Apple’s wrath because it appears to violate Apple’s end-user license agreement (EULA) for Macintosh OSX, which bars the operating system from being run on anything other than Apple-branded PCs. Apple’s cheapest similar computer, a Mac Pro, starts at about $2,000. Psystar’s OpenMac features a Leopard operating system with a 2.2-GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 2 GB of DDR system memory, and a 250-GB hard drive. The operating system, which is pre-installed by Psystar, is installed for life. Of late, Apple has been feeling the heat from many computer users about its high prices and its unwillingness to license its Leopard operating system to third-party PC manufacturers.
