Online holiday shopping plans

Date: 11-22-2007

According to a survey by AOL and Zogby International, 26% of shoppers plan to use at least half of their holiday shopping dollars online, while the remaining 74% plan to do at least some holiday shopping online. AOL commissioned Zogby International to conduct an online poll of Internet users in the top 20 U.S. direct market areas. The interactive poll results are based upon responses from 7,113 adults, who were surveyed from November 2-12, 2007.

Here are some key findings from the survey:
  • 70% cite convenience and time saving as the primary reason for shopping online.
  • 69% plan to conduct online price checks before hitting the stores.
  • 40% have used the mobile phone's Internet features to comparison shop online or to find a retail location.
  • 57% plan to spend on books, music, or movies.
  • 45% plan to spend under $500, while 16% plan to spend more than $1,000 on holiday gifts.
According to the survey, the top 20 online shopping cities are Philadelphia; Boston; Orlando; Seattle; Denver; Atlanta; Washington, DC; Houston; San Francisco; Detroit; Minneapolis; Phoenix; Sacramento; New York City; Cleveland; Los Angeles; Chicago; Tampa; Miami; and Dallas.
